Sprinklers Help Reduce Damage in Regina Business Fire

A properly-functioning sprinkler system minimized the damage in a recent Regina fire, according to a spokeswoman for the Regina Fire Department:

"Fortunately, this is a company that had its building sprinklered and that's what made all of the difference in the world with this fire," [Angela] Prawzick said. "The sprinkler system activated as it was designed to do and it contained the fire to the truck where the fire started. And then, our crews were able to contain it and get it out."

QuickStart Version 2.5 is Now Available
QuickStart 2.5

Another step forward for this remarkably flexible family of fire alarm panels.

All models - the QSC conventional, the QS1 intelligent, and the QS4 conventional/intelligent - benefit from the QuickStart 2.5 release with new and enhanced features, and quick and easy migration from previous software versions.

Here are just a few of the highlights...

QS-CU Configuration Utility

  • Expanded operating system compatibility - QS-CU is compatible with Windows 98, 2000, ME, XP Service Pack 2, and Windows Vista Home Edition
  • Support for R-Series remote annunciators
  • New Dialer Report displays strings sent to the CMS
  • Supports earlier versions of CPU code

Support for R-Series Annunciators

  • In addition to the CPU and SRA style remote annunciators, QuickStart version 2.5 now supports GE's R-Series annunciators. These feature easier installation, smaller size, and a simpler user interface.
  • Downloading to R-Series remote annunciators is no longer required - just set the address dipswitch!
  • R Series annunciators - the same ones used for our iO Series Control Panels - are now fully supported by QuickStart. This means fewer parts to stock and less programming and configuration to learn!

Compatibility

Version 2.5 of the QuickStart Configuration Utility (QS-CU) is backwards compatible with all previous versions of QuickStart CPU microcode, along with any future code releases. Upgrading to QS-CU version 2.5 allows laptop communication to any QuickStart system, regardless of its version.

Automatic sprinklers urgently needed in older residences (Globe & Mail)

Christie Blatchford recently wrote about fire safety for Ontario seniors in the Globe and Mail:

"Peter Crawshaw's mother, Elizabeth, doesn't remember the fire last January at the Muskoka Heights Retirement Home in Orillia that took the lives of four fellow residents and nearly killed her, too.

She did remember for a short time, and when anyone asked would just murmur, "Terrible," but now Mr. Crawshaw says, "She doesn't know. It's a blessing in disguise."

For 87-year-old Mrs. Crawshaw, it may be a mercy, but she isn't the only one with a failing memory on the subject: Ontario's frail elderly have been dying in fires at residences called "care occupancies" for almost three decades and still the government won't order in the one sure cure - automatic sprinklers in older facilities."

Success Story: Conestoga Cold Storage
Conestoga Cold Storage Location

In the spring of 2009 Conestoga decided to look at expanding their air aspiration coverage into multiple existing freezers in both the Kitchener and Mississauga locations and Edwards was able to secure the complete package, for both facilities, of fire alarm equipment, Safe Fire Detectors and full installation of the whole project due to a team effort with Strategic Partner, GE Security Canada.
